RSC Desktop Seminars with Brazilian Chemical Society Organic Chemistry Division (4 Aug)

4 August 2020 11:30-13:00, Brazil

Introduction

RSC Desktop Seminars in Organic Chemistry with the Brazilian Chemical Society 2020 are an initiative from the ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØ and the Brazilian Chemical Society to bring cutting-edge research directly to you!

Covid-19 has exposed us to a new reality where the virtual world is much more important than before. In order to keep our students engaged at the frontiers of Organic Chemistry, we have organized a weekly webinar series that is a joint collaboration between the ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØ (RSC) and the Organic Chemistry Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). It is an alternative way to share work and interact with potential collaborators.

The sections will alternate between Brazilian and international speakers, in some cases with the opportunity for a selected Brazilian early career researcher to engage with the audience by presenting their recent independent career developments.

Programme

11:30 Introductions and welcome
11:35 RSC presentation
11:50 Main Presentation with Q&A
12:45 Closing remarks
13:00 Close

Speaker

Professor Norberto P Lopes
The Role of Small Molecules in Ecological Interactions

Mass spectrometry methodologies are important strategies for investigating the complex chemistry of natural products. During the last years, the increasing power of informatics for data analysis has increased our capacity to inventory many biological systems. In our laboratory, for instance, we have investigated neuroactive and antimicrobial compounds from skin secretions of anuran amphibians. We have found that some components of the rich secretion can be associated with chemical communication between frogs at intra and interspecific levels. In this talk we will present and discuss the potential relevance of plants and bacteria as a source of chemical signals in frogs, which represent one component of the vast Brazilian Biodiversity.

Speakers
Norberto P Lopes, FCFRP-USP, Brazil

Professor Lopes graduated in 1989 from the School of Pharmaceutical ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØs of Ribeirão Preto – University of São Paulo (FCFRP-USP) with a finalization internship at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany). He holds a Master's degree (1991–1993) in Pharmacognosy from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØs-USP and a PhD in Organic Chemistry (1993–1997) from the Institute of Chemistry-USP with internship at the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Washington State University USA. He held a Post-Doctorate in Mass Spectrometry at the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK. In 1998, he began his work as Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry at FCFRP-USP and 2008 was promoted to Full Professor.  He was the head of the Physics and Chemistry department for two terms and President of the Research Committee at FCFRP. Currently, he is a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies at USP. Professor Lopes was a member of the Administrative Council in the area of Pharmaceutical ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØs at CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), the main Brazilian agency for fostering research. In 2017 he was elected a member of the Brazilian Academy of ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØs. Professor Lopes has acted three times as visiting Professor at the Food Chemistry Department-University of Münster teaching Mass Spectrometry. He has a series of personal awards, including the medal honour of the BrMAss and Innovation Price from Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). He has held several positions on the SBQ board as Treasurer and Vice-President of Natural Products division, a member of the Advisory Board, Treasurer, General Secretary and more recently President of SBQ. In 2005, he was elected to the creation committee for the foundation of the USP Technology Park at the Ribeirão Preto Campus and has served continuously. This recognition also reflects the fact that six companies with a strong impact on the local economy were created from NPPNS.
