In celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT 2019), the ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØ is organising a series of talks at science centres, universities and other venues across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Aimed at the public and established chemists alike, the IYPT Lectures will feature some of the most exciting science communicators in the field of chemistry, whose talks will bring the periodic table of elements to life.
 

About the lecture

Mendeleev’s periodic table of 63 elements, has now become118 elements, but which of these are essential for human life, and which can be used in the design of medicines? Are essential elements all coded for by the human genome? I will make an element-by-element journey through the periodic table, and identify elements essential for human life, and also non-essential elements, and even radionuclides, which can be used for therapy and diagnosis of disease. Understanding the periodic table of life will lead to major advances in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, and to improvements in health.

The Manchester edition, '150 Years of the Periodic Table : The Elements of Life and Medicines ', will be given by Peter Sadler, University of Warwick on 2 October 2019 at The ÐÂÔÂÖ±²¥appÏÂÔØ and Industry Museum. 
 
The talk will be part of the museums Chemistry: Late event and Peter’s talk will start at 19:15 and will be 30 minutes in duration. We encourage you to arrive 15 minutes before the advertised start time in order to get a seat.
