The role of AI in peer review: Thoughts from an Editor-in-Chief
In my opinion, the novelty, scientific depth and potential impact of a research manuscript can only be accurately assessed by a human reviewer. However, the growing use of AI tools in academia, industry and editing may also extend to the manuscript review process. In this context, AI can support reviewers by identifying relevant papers in the field, checking for similar publications by the same or other authors, and helping to determine whether the manuscript addresses a knowledge gap in a specific area.
From a formal perspective, AI can also be valuable in ensuring that the manuscript cites relevant and up-to-date scientific literature, adheres to proper grammar and style, and complies with the journal's guidelines for authors.
