The recent development of mechanical–chemical strategies as alternative means to activate chemical processes has allowed access to new, more environmentally sustainable strategies to prepare organic molecules or pharmaceutically relevant fragments and functionalities, paving the way to medicinal mechanochemistry.
Selected examples for the eco-conscious preparation of hydantoin-based active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) will be presented, highlighting the advantages of mechanochemical process, and its scalability by reactive twin-screw extrusion (TSE), allowing the continuous manufacturing of pharmaceuticals products.
