Reforms to science at GCSE and A-level: implementation, practical science and support for teachers and learners

Introduction
Delegates will discuss the content and the implementation of the new GCSEs, including the implications of removing modules, having a greater focus on scientific knowledge and the inclusion of mathematical content, ahead of the teaching of the qualifications in September 2016.

Further areas of discussion will include the role of practical assessment in science education, including the likely impact of proposed reforms to science practical assessments at GCSE and A-level. Delegates will discuss the implications posed by the use of written exam questions in place of controlled assessment at GCSE and A-level on the development of practical science skills and the delivery of practical activities in schools.

Sessions will also focus on the new A-level science qualifications towards the end of the first year of teaching and whether they will effectively prepare young people for Higher Education and careers in science. Steps that could be taken to further encourage industry involvement in science education and address the gender imbalance in the uptake of sciences at A-level and beyond will also be considered.
